My family has always loved the Star Wars franchise, specifically my dad. I wanted to create something special for my dad as a gift, and as I have become more insterested in digital art, I wanted to make a print for him. Using my previous creative skills and a photo of our family in Montana, I recreated our family as Star Wars characters.

I’ve always been fascinated with birds and flowers, and a lot of my early art features both, mostly using either pencil or marker and muted, earthy palettes. In this piece, I wanted to go in a different direction and convey more vibrancy and color. I used a popular iPad application called Procreate for the entire piece, which was challenging not only because it was my first time doing art on the iPad, but because getting the lighting just right was especially difficult. With the flower, the light comes from within versus an external source, and thus the colors get darker as the petals get bigger. Similarly, getting the colors of the flower to reflect accurately on my sister’s face required a ton of trial and error. I ended up really liking the contrast of my sister’s soft, neutral face against the nightglow intensity of the flower. Her youth and princess-like features also fit the theme, resulting in an almost Alice in Wonderland-type feel.

Through this piece, I unite my love of art and code by showcasing three of my favorite coding sequences from projects that are meaningful to me. Each silhouette demonstrates code from a different language. The HTML sequence (left) shows the beginnings of code from my Girls Who Code website. The CSS sequence on top of my profile (middle) showcases the style that pairs with the HTML. Lastly, the Python sequence (right) displays my favorite code which is If and Elif statements.

My sister Emery and I are huge fans of the Harry Potter book and movie series. Emery finished reading the books early last year, and one afternoon we gleefully binge-watched the final two movies. Inspired, I penciled this drawing of Emery (at left) and me (at right) in our Hogwarts House uniforms. While it started as a spur of the moment, I ended up liking the final product. The drawing has a slightly cartoonish and exaggerated style which is similar to Jim Kay’s artwork in the illustrated versions of the Harry Potter books.
